I．History and Development
Founded in 2018, the School of Journalism and Communication (School of Educational Technology), was formed by merging the Journalism Specialityfrom the School of Literature and Radio and Television DirectionSpecialityfrom the School of Drama and Art into School of Educational Technology. It is a co-construction unit between Shenyang Normal University (SNU) and the Publicity Department of Shenyang Municipal Committee of the CPC. At present, the school has four undergraduate programs: Journalism, Educational Technology, Network and New Media, Radio and Television Director, and two master’s programs in Educational Technology (academic master’s) and Journalism and Communication (professional master’s). At the same time, it undertakes a postgraduate program of M. ED in Modern Educational Technology. Among them, Journalism and Educational Technology are the National First-Class Undergraduate Specialities. There are now five departments: Journalism, Educational Technology, Network and New Media, Radio and Television Director and the Department of General Courses for Teacher Education, as well astwo experimental teaching centres.

II. Faculty and Students
As of December 2022, there are 634 undergraduates in the school, who can obtain bachelor’s in literature, science, and art respectively. There are 106 graduate students, who can obtain Master’s of Science, Master’s of Journalism and Communication and Education masters respectively after graduation. Students come from seven provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government.
The school now has 49 faculty members. Among the full-time teachers, 13 have doctorates and there are 8 professors and associate professors. There are 3 teachers with overseas studying experience. At present, there are 18 postgraduate instructors, 2 Teachers of Distinction at provincial level, 2 Outstanding Talents Support Programs in Liaoning Province, 1 Leading Talent and 2 Top Talents of Shenyang.
III. Degree Programs
A. Undergraduate Programs
l The school offers three undergraduate programs: Journalism, Educational Technology and Network and New Media.
l Journalism is a 4year program with 151 credits. Its core modules include Introduction to Journalism, Marxist Journalism Thought, History of Chinese Journalism, Journalism Editing, Journalism Ethics and Regulations, etc.
l Educational Technology is also a 4year program with 149 credits. Its core modules include Learning Science and Technology, Instructional Technology and Media, Educational Communication, Instructional design, Research Method of Educational Technology, etc.
l Network and New Media is a 4year program with 150 credits. The core modules include Introduction to Network and New Media, Digital Media Technology, Non-linear Editing, Creation of Digital Multimedia Works, Planning and Production of New Media Audio-visual Programs, etc.
Postgraduate Programs
l Journalism and Communication is a 3year graduate program with 45 credits. Its core modules include Marxist Journalism and Communication Thoughts, Research Methods of Journalism and Communication, Theoretical Basis of Journalism and Communication, History of Journalism and Communication at Home and abroad, Research on New Media, etc. This program has two joint training demonstration bases for postgraduates’ professional degrees in Liaoning Province.
l Educational Technology is a 3year program with 42 credits. The core modules include Theoretical Research on Educational Technology, Research on Information Technology and Teachers’ Professional Development, Information Technology Education, Theoretical Research on Wisdom Education, Teaching Analysis and Evaluation, etc.
VI. Academic Research
Since its establishment in 2018, the faculty members of our school have published 21 research papers in core academic journals: 7 academic monographs in national and provincial publishing houses. They have also won 13 provincial and ministerial awards; 5 national and ministerial-level projects, 37 provincial and municipal projects and 3 horizontal projects with enterprises were approved.
The Educational Technology Department has been granted the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centre, the National Quality Resource-Sharing Course, and the National First-Class Undergraduate Course. It has also won successive awards at provincial level, which include Liaoning Provincial Exemplary Specialityin Higher Education, Liaoning Provincial Teaching Teams in Higher Education, the Provincial Virtual Experiment Teaching Demonstration Centre, and Provincial Demonstration modules, etc.
V. International Exchanges and Cooperation
Five faculty members have been sent abroad for doctorates or scholarly visits in Japan, France, the United States and otherSouth-east Asian countries. In 2022, the school hosted the 21st International Forum on Educational Technology (IFET 2022).
VI. SJC (SET) at a Glance
l In 1993, the Educational Technology Speciality was approved.
l In 1995, the Educational Technology Specialitybegan to recruit students.
l In 2000, it was authorized to confer master’s in Educational Technology, and Journalism Speciality was approved.
l In 2001, it was approved to confer master’s in Modern Educational Technology. Journalism Speciality began to recruit students.
l In 2004, the Radio and Television Director Speciality was established, and enrolment began in the same year.
l In 2009, the Educational Technology Speciality was approved as Liaoning Provincial Model Speciality.
l In 2014, the Network and New MediaSpeciality was established. It was authorized to confer master’s in Journalism and Communication. Educational Technology Speciality was approved as Key Construction Speciality for Undergraduate (Comprehensive Reform Pilot Speciality); Journalism and Educational Technology Specialities won the first place in the provincial comprehensive evaluation in the field.
l In 2015, Journalism and Communication for master’s began to enroll students. Educational Technology Speciality was approved as the Liaoning Provincial Application-Oriented Exemplary Speciality.
l In 2018, the School of Journalism and Communication was merged by Journalism Speciality of School of Literature, Educational Technology Speciality, Network & New Media Speciality of School of Educational Technology, and Radio & Television Director Speciality of School of Drama and Art. (School of Educational Technology)
l In 2019, Educational Technology won the Provincial First-Class Exemplary Speciality for Undergraduate Education.
l In 2020, Journalism won the Provincial First-Class Exemplary Speciality for Undergraduate Education.
l In 2021, Journalism won the National First-Class Construction Speciality; Radio and Television Director Program stopped enrolling students.
l In 2022, Educational Technology Speciality obtained the National First-Class Undergraduate Construction Speciality.
