I. History and Development
Founded in 1951, the School of Literature was originally known as the Department of Chinese Language of North-eastern Education College, one of the earliest established departments of Chinese in the North-east. It was renamed as the Department of Chinese Language, Shenyang Teachers’ College in 1953, then the Department of Chinese Language,Liaoning First Teachers’ College in 1965, and in 1978 it was renamed back to it’s original name in 1953. In 2003, it was finally promoted to the School of Literature.
The school is composed of two departments, Chinese Language and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), and eight Teaching and Research Sections of Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature, Chinese Ancient Literature, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Science of Literature and Arts and Grammatology, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Chinese Philology, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and Teaching Theory of Chinese Language, with over 10 research institutes, such as Liaoning Academy of Hong Lou Meng as sub-divisions.
The school offers two undergraduate programs: Chinese Language and Literature (Teacher Education) and TCSOL (Teacher Education).
The School of Literature is authorized to confer master’s in the Primary discipline of Chinese Language and Literature with eight sub-disciplines: Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature, Chinese Ancient Literature, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Science of Literature and Arts, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Chinese Philology, Chinese Minority Languages and Literature, Chinese Classical Philology.
The School is also authorized to confer master’s in Curriculum and Teaching Theories (Chinese), a sub-discipline of Education, and in two professional master’s programs: Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) and Master of Education (M.Ed. /Chinese). Chinese Language and Literature is the first-class primary discipline in Shenyang Normal University (SNU); Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature is the key discipline of Liaoning Province. In 2022 the China Discipline Ranking (CDR), ranked the discipline of Chinese Language and Literature C+. In 2020 National Professional Degree Ranking of MOE, ranked the program of MTCSOL C+.

II. Faculty and Students
As of now, the School has enrolled 900 undergraduates in BA programs, and 216 graduate students in MA and Master of Education programs. The students are from different parts across the country, including 12 international students.
There are 51 faculty members in the school, 42 of whom are full-time teachers, 32 have a doctorate 8 are professors, 6 have overseas academic experience. Among full-time teachers, 1 is expert receiving special government allowances from the State Council, 1 is excellent expert of Liaoning Province, 2 are distinguished professors of Liaoning Province, and more than 10 are excellent and prominent talents and teachers in different programs at provincial and municipal levels. 3 teachers are members of Liaoning Discipline Assessment Group and Advisory Committee on Teaching in Higher Education, over 20 teachers are judges for “Mao Dun Literature Prize”, “Lu Xun Literature Prize”, “Lao She Literature Prize” and different other national and provincial prizes for literature and arts, judges for social science fund projects at different levels and Philosophy and Social Science fund projects of MOE, or head or director of major professional associations at national, provincial and municipal levels.
III. Degree Programs
The school offers two 4year undergraduate programs: Chinese Language and Literature and TCSOL (Teacher Education).
l The program of Chinese Language and Literature has won various titles and honours at different levels, which include “National Featured Speciality”, “The First Batch of National First-Class Undergraduate Programs Construction Site”, “Liaoning Provincial First-Class Exemplary Speciality for Undergraduate Education”, “Liaoning Provincial Undergraduate Exemplary Speciality”, “SNU Key Construction Speciality”.
l The program of TCSOL has also won the following titles: “National First-Class Undergraduate Programs Construction Site”, “The First Batch of Liaoning Provincial First-Class Exemplary Speciality for Undergraduate Education”, “Liaoning Provincial Speciality with Distinctive Features and Strength”, “SNU Key Support Speciality”. In 2017, the school faculty members undertook the research project for the “Cultivation Plan of Excellent Middle-School Teachers of Chinese” sponsored by Ministry of Education (MOE). In 2018 Provincial Assessment of Teacher Education Speciality of Liaoning, the speciality of Chinese Language and Literature in our school ranked No 1, and passed in 2020 level 2 National Professional Certification of Teacher Education. There are such main modules for this speciality as Introduction to Literature, Chinese Ancient Literature, Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature, Ancient Chinese Language, Modern Chinese Language.
The speciality of TCSOL is a “National First-Class Undergraduate Programs Construction Site”, “The First Batch of Liaoning Provincial First-Class Exemplary Speciality for Undergraduate Education”, “Liaoning Provincial Featured Speciality”, “SNU Key Support Speciality”. The speciality also ranked highest in different provincial speciality assessments. The main modules of this speciality include Modern Chinese Language, Ancient Chinese Language, Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to TCSOL, Pedagogy of Teaching Chinese as A Foreign Language.
The school is authorized to confer master’s in the Primary discipline of Chinese Language and Literature with eight such sub-disciplines as Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature, Chinese Ancient Literature. The school is also authorized to confer master’s in Curriculum and Teaching Theories (Chinese), a sub-discipline of Education, and in professional master’s program—Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL), which are 3year postgraduate programs.
l The main modules of Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature include: Studies of Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature, Studies of the History of Chinese Contemporary literature, Studies of Works of Contemporary Chinese Writers, Frontier Report on Chinese Contemporary Literature.
l The main modules of Chinese Ancient Literature include: Research Methodology and Thesis Writing of Ancient Literature, Monographic Studies of Proses of Tang and Song Dynasties, Monographic Studies of Poetry of Tang and Song Dynasties, Studies of Opera of Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
l The main modules of Comparative Literature and World Literature include: Methodology and Frontier Issues of Comparative Literature, Studies of Chinese and Foreign Literary Classics and Studies of the Relationships Between Chinese and Foreign Literature.

IV. Academic Research
As of December 2022, the school faculty members had published a large number of research papers in national top journals and academic monographs. The faculty members had also undertaken over 100 research projects at national, ministerial and provincial levels, over 80 of which had been awarded “Lu Xun Literature Prize”, “Ding Ling Literature Prize” and several other prizes at national and provincial levels for literature, literature and arts criticism, philosophy and sociology and teaching. Two of the academic monographs have been included in the Source Book Catalogue of Chinese Academic Books Citation Index (CBKCI) by the Institute for Chinese Social Sciences Research and Assessment of Nanjing University. There are 4 provincial and ministerial key research bases in the school, including the “Literature and Arts and Social Development Research Centre”, which is the key research base of Humanities and Social Sciences of Liaoning Provincial Educational Department, and “Liaoning Cultural and Creative Industry Research Base”, which is the key research base of the Publicity Department of Liaoning Provincial CPC Committee. There is also one provincial excellent teaching team and 2 provincial scientific research and innovation teams, 2 provincial innovation exchange centres and one provincial innovative practice base for graduate students.
V. International Exchange and Cooperation
In recent years, the school has held a number of international and national academic conferences, such as the International Symposium on Language and Culture in the Context of Chinese International Education; more than 10 teachers were sent abroad for visits and attended international academic conferences. Over 100 teachers and students delivered speeches at important academic conferences at home and abroad. 4 teachers were sent to the Confucius Institutes in Jordan and Lebanon. Every year, more than 10 students are sent to Japan, South Korea, the United States, the Philippines and other countries for exchange and practice. The school offers 6 majors including Linguistics and Applied Linguistics for international students.
VI. Distinguished Alumni
l Sun Yu, graduated in 1985, is a Distinguished Professor in the Changjiang Scholars Program, is now professor and doctoral supervisor of Renmin University of China. He was the former director of Beijing Lu Xun Museum and dean of the School of Literature, Renmin University of China.
l Zang Yongqing, graduated in 1988, is a member of the National Committee of the CPPCC, is now president of People’s Literature Publishing House.
l Gao Chen, graduated in 1988, is a NPC member and a distinguished teacher. He has been appointed as Party Secretary and Principal of North-east Yucai School.
l Zheng Guomin, graduated in 1992, is now a professor in the School of Language and Literature of Beijing Normal University, doctoral supervisor, assistant to the University President, and visiting scholar to Harvard University. He is the chairman of the Chinese Education Committee of Chinese Association of Higher Education, the leader of the Development and Revision Group of Chinese Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education of the MOE, the Chinese subject expert member of the National Textbook Committee, the Advisory Committee Member of Higher Education Speciality Establishment and Teaching of MOE, and the secretary-general of the Advisory Committee of MOE on the Training and Teaching of High School Teachers.
l Liu Chaozhong, graduated in 1992, is currently a distinguished teacher and has been appointed as Party Secretary and Principal ofLiaoning Province Shiyan High School.
l Jin Chengyu, graduated in 1995, is professor and doctoral supervisor in the School of Liberal Arts of Nanjing University. He is a “Young Scholar” in the Changjiang Scholars Program by MOE.
