The Teacher Education College (Liaoning Teaching and Research Training Centre for Basic Education)

I. History and Development

Founded in 2019, the Teacher Education College (Liaoning Teaching and Research Training Centre for Basic Education) was previously the School of Teacher Professional Development. The college not only educates undergraduate students and graduate students in Curriculum and Instruction, but also undertakes the training of principals and teachers of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as well as basic education teaching and research in Liaoning province.

The college is co-located with Liaoning Institute of Education Administration and Liaoning Early Childhood Teacher Training Centre. At present, there are 100 in-service staff, including 9 professors, 20 associate professors and 46 senior teachers. Among them 17 have doctorates and 3 have visiting experience in the United States. The college (centre) is composed of 10 departments, including departments of: Comprehensive Office (Putonghua Proficiency Test Station), Pedagogy Teaching and Research, Psychology Teaching and Research, Subject Teaching, Practical Training Teaching, Teacher Vocational Skills Training Centre, Normal Student Educational Practice, Cadre Training, Research and Training, and Editorial of Teaching Research for Primary and SecondarySchools.

II. Faculty and Students

Since 2019, the college has enrolled more than 200 graduate students who have obtained master’sin subject education and professional master’s respectively upon graduation. Students come from more than 10 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, including Liaoning, Shandong, Guangdong, Tianjin, Anhui, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Hebei, Shanghai, Henan, Jilin, Heilongjiang and Shanxi, working as middle school teachers after passing teacher qualification examination on subject teaching in and out of the province.

At present, there are 27 full-time teachers and 5 part-time and outside teachers. Among them, 15 have doctorates, and 9 masters. There are 4 teachers with senior titles, and 11 with sub-senior titles. There are 27 graduate supervisors, 1 Teacher of Distinction at the provincial level, 1 Talent among the one thousand talents of “One Hundred-One Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project” of Liaoning Province, and over 20 high-level talents of Shenyang.

III．Degree Programs

The college offers undergraduate normal students teacher education modules.

Compulsory theoretical modules in education: Foundations of Psychology, Foundations of Pedagogy, Teacher Professional Ethics and Policies and Regulations.

Optional modules in Developmental Psychology of Middle School Students, Moral Development and Moral Education of Middle School Students, Seminar of Pedagogy, Seminar of Psychology.

Educational skills modules in Teacher Writing Training, Teacher Language Training, Class Teacher Training, Micro Teaching, Education Document Writing,Science Experiment Teaching Training.

Theoretical modules in subject teaching: Subject Teaching Design, Curriculum Standards and Textbook Analysis, Seminar of Subject Teaching.

The college(centre) recruits graduate students every year, including more than 50 full-time and 20 part-time graduate students of Master of Education in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Music, Ideological and Political Subjects; more than 10 academic graduate students in Curriculum and Instruction (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Ideology and Politics, Music) and Calligraphy. The length of schooling is 3 years.

IV. Academic Research

The college has been awarded more than 50 scientific research projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels. The faculty members have got 10 academic monographs and more than 30 papers published in authoritative academic journals such as Chinese Social Science Citation Index(CSSCI). In 2022, they won several prizes for basic education teaching achievements in Liaoning Province, including 1 special prize, 1 first prize and 1 second prize. One policy-making proposal is instructed by the national leaders. They have also received 6 important theoretical articles published in Guangming Daily, China Education Daily and China Teacher Paper. The college is now working with Liaoning Experimental School to build a joint training base for professional degrees in Liaoning Province.

Graduate students in the college have won nearly 80 awards in national and provincial competitions, and 3 are admitted to doctoral program. Two graduation theses have been accredited excellent theses at provincial level and 15 at university level.

V. The Teacher Education College at a Glance

l In 2002, The People’s Government of Liaoning Province decided to merge Shenyang Teachers’ College with Liaoning Institute of Education to establish Shenyang Normal University. Since then, the functions and responsibilities of Liaoning Institute of Education have been undertaken by Liaoning Teaching and Research Training Centre for Basic Education.

l In 2019, The School of Teacher Professional Development and Liaoning Teaching and Research Training Centre for Basic Education are merged to establish the Teacher Education College (Liaoning Teaching and Research Training Centre for Basic Education)
